How big is the average American public school? It's probably smaller than you think

The average public high school enrolls about 700 students, but the typical one enrolls 420, because a few thousands-strong giants pull the average up. Elementary schools average about 424. And the state you live in changes the answer by a factor of five.

Does School Size Affect Student Outcomes? What the Research Actually Says

Parents look at a high school of 4,000 and a high school of 600 and assume one is obviously better. The evidence is more interesting than either instinct. Size shapes outcomes, but mostly through belonging and climate, and it predicts far less than how a school is run.
