In 42 states, the early grades are now smaller than middle school
Public schools in 42 states enroll fewer students in grades 1 through 3 than in grades 6 through 8, according to an allk12 analysis of 2024-25 federal data. Nationally the early grades are 3.5% smaller. Nevada, California, and Utah show the biggest gaps.
