Valdosta, Georgia has been named a top finalist to become the permanent home of the National High School Football Hall of Fame, the organization's foundation announced, putting the south Georgia city ahead of three rivals in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
The foundation listed four "football-rich communities" as finalists: Valdosta, Massillon, Ohio, Berea, Ohio, and Pittsburgh. No final decision has been made, and founder and chairman LaMont "ShowBoat" Robinson said Pittsburgh remains a serious contender.
"Football is part of Valdosta's history, culture and identity," Robinson said. "Valdosta has the passion and national reputation to become an outstanding home for this institution."
The hall was founded in 2010 and has had a physical home in Canton, Ohio, alongside the Pro Football Hall of Fame, since 2023. In that time it has held three sold-out induction ceremonies and honored more than 100 players, coaches, and contributors, including Peyton Manning, Jim Brown, Eric Dickerson, Eddie George, and coach Paul Brown. The proposed permanent site would include memorabilia, interactive exhibits, educational programs, special events, and an annual induction ceremony weekend, which the foundation pitches as a source of tourism, jobs, and hotel stays for whichever city wins.
"Our goal is to partner with the city that shares our vision and is prepared to help us build America's greatest celebration of high school football," Robinson said.
Why the pick makes sense on paper
Valdosta High School has won more football games than any high school in the country: 971 by MaxPreps' count heading into this season, or 977 by the school's own tally and the National Federation of State High School Associations record book. The Wildcats have held the top spot since 1987, when they passed Massillon Washington, which is why Massillon is on the same finalist list. The two programs have sat first and second on the all-time list for nearly four decades.
The city has a second program that would be the flagship almost anywhere else. Lowndes High School, in the county district that surrounds the city, enrolls about 3,150 students, making it one of the largest high schools in Georgia, and plays Valdosta every fall in a crosstown rivalry game.
The two schools also tell a story about the city that the hall of fame pitch leaves out. Valdosta High, in the city school system, enrolls about 2,460 students and is 76% Black. Lowndes High, in the county system, is 55% white and 25% Black. Two of the best-known football programs in the country share one town and two very different student bodies, a pattern that repeats across the South wherever a city district and a county district sit side by side.
What happens next
The foundation has not published a timeline or the terms it is asking finalist cities to meet. Halls of fame of this kind typically look for land, a local funding partner, and a commitment on construction, and the decision will likely turn on which city puts the strongest package together rather than on football history alone. Pittsburgh, with a much larger metro area and its own deep high school football tradition, is the obvious counterweight.
For Valdosta, the prize is a permanent tourist draw in a city whose fall weekends are already organized around the sport. For high school football fans elsewhere, it would mean the sport's hall of fame moving out of the shadow of the professional one, to a town where the high school game has always been the main event.
