The call came over the school radios on Thursday morning: a medical emergency in one of the bathrooms at Millbrook Magnet High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The school's security officer had gone into labor.
Principal Monica Sawyer and bookkeeper K'Mani Freeman answered it. Freeman told WRAL she is a doula, and she told the principal what to do. The baby, a girl, arrived within minutes, Freeman said.
"I was like, well, we have a baby. Great, we probably need to warm her up just a little bit," Freeman told WRAL.
"I heard a baby was crying and Ms. Freeman was telling us to go get a blanket from our office," Sawyer said.
The officer is a contracted security officer assigned to the school, and staff helped with the birth before EMS arrived, CBS17 reported. Neither station named her.
Sawyer shared the news in a letter to staff and families. "We're happy to share that both mom and baby are doing well," she wrote. "I know you'll join me in congratulating the family and welcoming our newest (and tiniest!) Wildcat. We've already ordered some baby spirit wear so mom and daughter will be ready to cheer on the Wildcats together!"
The principal has a name in mind, too. "I thought Brook would be a beautiful name as an ode to Millbrook. But we don't know. Mom hasn't decided yet," Sawyer said.
Millbrook, part of the Wake County Public School System, had 2,498 students and about 137 teachers in the 2024-25 school year, according to federal data. The school has set up a page where people can help support the newborn and her family.
"What a special day to be a Wildcat!" Sawyer said.
