St. Johns County had the highest spring 2025 test results of any Florida school district. About 75% of its students passed the state's English language arts (ELA) tests, and 78% passed math, according to allk12's analysis of Florida Department of Education data.

Nassau County was a close second. Its math rate of 80.3% was the highest in the state, and its ELA rate was 72.0%. St. Johns' two-subject average of 76.9% put it 0.7 points ahead of Nassau's 76.2%. Both districts border Duval County, home to Jacksonville.

Third place went to a district with 1,152 students. Lafayette County, whose schools in Mayo are classified as rural and remote by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), posted 67.0% in ELA and 76.9% in math.

Florida's main state test is FAST, short for Florida's Assessment of Student Thinking. Students who score Level 3 or above count as passing in the state's school grades formula, and that is the share used here. ELA covers grades 3 to 10. Math covers grades 3 to 8 plus the Algebra 1 end-of-course exam, the only high school math test in this data. Statewide, across every operating Florida public school with results, 56.7% of tested students passed ELA and 58.9% passed math.

The Florida Constitution says "Each county shall constitute a school district," so the ranking covers the state's 67 county districts, including the charter schools NCES lists under each one. It leaves out Florida's special districts: the university lab schools at FAMU, FAU, FSU, and UF, Florida Virtual School, the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, IDEA Public Schools' charter district, and a few other small statewide or single-school districts.

Florida's 67 county school districts, including district-sponsored charter schools; university lab schools, Florida Virtual School, the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, and other special districts are excluded. ELA and math figures are the share of tested students scoring Level 3 or above on spring 2025 FAST tests (math includes the Algebra 1 end-of-course exam), across each district's operating schools. Clay County, 12th, also borders Duval, so three of the top 12 sit next to Jacksonville. Walton, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa, all in the western Panhandle, ranked fourth, eighth, and ninth. Four of the top 20 had fewer than 3,000 students: Lafayette, Gilchrist, Liberty, and Glades. Their rates rest on a few schools. In Lafayette, only two schools reported results, Lafayette Elementary and Lafayette High, and 437 students took the math tests.

Lafayette's ranking also stands out for income. About 60% of its students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25, according to NCES, compared with 21% in St. Johns, 38% in Nassau, and 46% statewide.

The biggest districts landed in the middle. Broward County (243,553 students) ranked 14th and Miami-Dade County (335,461) ranked 15th, both above the statewide rates in ELA and math. Palm Beach County was 22nd and Orange County 24th. Hillsborough County ranked 37th, at 53.7% in ELA and 55.5% in math, and Duval County was 50th, at 49.6% and 53.5%. The two other districts with more than 100,000 students ranked lower: Lee County was 53rd and Polk County 58th.

How the state's 2026 grades compare

The Department of Education announced its 2025-26 school and district grades on July 1, 2026. Those grades rest on spring 2026 tests, a year newer than the scores above, and they measure more than pass rates. A grade can include up to 12 parts, among them learning gains, graduation rates, and college and career acceleration, such as AP and dual enrollment courses. The state grades each district "as if the district's students are enrolled in one large combination school," and an A takes 65% of possible points or more.

Statewide, 34 districts earned an A, 23 a B, and 10 a C, and none earned a D or F, according to the department's results packet. The grades line up with the test-score list. All 20 districts in the table earned an A for 2026, and all 20 also earned an A in 2025, the grades built on the same spring 2025 tests as this ranking. The highest-ranked district with a B for 2026 was Union County, 21st by test scores, with 62% of possible points.

St. Johns earned 76% of possible points, the highest of any district, according to the state's district grades spreadsheet. Nassau, Lafayette, and Walton tied for next at 74%. The state's own 2026 achievement figures put St. Johns at 78% in ELA and 79% in math, and Nassau at 75% and 79%.

All six of the largest districts earned an A for 2026. Hillsborough moved up from a B in 2025. Hillsborough and Duval each earned 65% of possible points, the minimum for an A. School-by-school results, including the six schools that got an F, are in allk12's story on Florida's 2026 school grades, and individual schools are ranked on the best schools in Florida page.
